The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) will be launching its pre-candidate training for the 2024 election cycle in early April, starting with two free of charge community sessions to help give more information to those who might be considering standing for their local council. The composition of council should reflect the diversity of its community and encouraging a pipeline of informed candidates is important to good governance.
These online webinars are free of charge and are designed to prepare and inform potential candidates. You must register to attend.
What do councils do? What is the role of a councillor? How can represent your community?
In this session you will gain an overview of what it means to stand for local government including how local councils work, the responsibilities of councillors and key issues to consider when considering standing for council.

The Victorian Government has set a target of 50/50 representation in 2025, and to reach that goal, there needs to be a substantial increase in the number of women councillors elected.
The VLGA supports a diversity of candidates - including women - to stand for election. This session is tailored for women candidates to hear more about what it is to be a councillor, through a gendered lens. This includes key issues such as the gender-based barriers to standing for election, as well as the importance of self-care and balancing care and work responsibilities.
